My Personal Birthing Experience

As I waited for my first child’s birth, I was so excited as well as nervous because I had no idea what to expect, and this was one of the things that I couldn’t control. I always sought out advice from others, but nothing can really prepare you for the birth of your own child. I can remember going to the doctor on November 19, 2005, for my last doctor’s visit, and he saying to me “Tiffany you are going to have this baby today or tomorrow”. I replied “how can that be if I’m not having any contractions”. The doctor turns around and says to me “believe it or not Tiffany you’re in labor as we speak”. I looked at him with this puzzled look on my face, and I said if you say so doc. turns out he was absolutely right!

The rest of the day was pretty normal.  I met my husband for lunch. Then I decided to go visit some friends of ours, and after that we decided to go by Baby R Us, to do some last minute shopping. This lasted about two hours because that particular night I decided that I needed to go to every store in Chicago. By the time we made it home my husband and I began packing my hospital bags. While we were packing my bags I remembered turning around and saying to my husband how will I know I’m in labor?  He replied, “You will start going to the bathroom on yourself.” I said, “what if that doesn’t happen because right now I just feel a whole lot of pressure?”

He turned around so fast until he just started grabbing everything he could find.  When he got finished I remembered putting four suit cases in our car and I’m just standing there laughing. He got so upset with me. He stated, “Tiffany this is not a laughing matter this is not the time to be laughing, or joking if you have this baby right now I don’t know what I’m going to do”  I said, “ we have so many bags I’m not moving to the hospital.” By this time we made it to the hospital and I got checked in, and I got hooked up to all these monitors.

I remembered the nurse asking me if I needed any pain medication.  The first time I responded no because I was determined that I would give birth naturally without any drugs. Boy! Where did I get that crazy idea out my head? The nurse came around for the second time, she asked, “ how I was doing, and I told her I would like some pain medication please.” It took her so long to comeback until I started buzzing for her, and when she came back I told her if you would like for me to remain calm and pleasant then I suggest you go and get me PAIN MEDICATION NOW! Please thank you!

She had returned with the medication.  I was able to get some rest. Hours had passed it was clearly the next morning. The doctor said surprise it is time for you to have this baby. The nurse came back in which was my Lamaze coach, and she says princess you are not pushing you are not doing anything I have taught you. I screamed princess is pushing and very hard I might add.

She looked me in the eye I said I guess you have to stay here another night pushing. I said no I won’t, so I gave one good push the doctor told me to stop pushing. I told the doc I can’t, he turned around to grab something. As he was turning around I pushed anyway, and my son came flying out, and the doc caught him in the nick of time. This whole experience was amazing and wonderful! My son has been a blessing to my family!
